Western Cape Education Department (WCED)
Led by OKRA, the Netherlands based Landscape Architecture firm that is one of the core members of our collective, RCDC secured funding from the Dutch Government in order to implement a water resilience system. This system was designed by OKRA as part of their Climate Adaptation toolkit.
Isidima, another collective member who are an innovative ecological engineering consultancy based in Cape Town, provided the engineering input to adapt to the conditions at Intlanganiso School.
Installation of a rainwater harvesting and re-use system
A green wall for a hydroponic herb garden
An Aquaponic system for improved water nutrients for the urban farm
Installation of a solar panel activating the water circulation system
Interactive Learning & Education Area about Hydroponics and Aquaponics. The design proposal indicates the outdoor shaded space as a learning area for students to learn, gather and observe the system.
This is the first stage of implementation. Subject to funding RCDC will implement the full system making the school fully water resilient and off-grid. Currently the schools’ water budget is five times the designated budget. Implementation of the full system will result in the schools’ water costs being within the designated budget.
